BRONX, NY, UNITED STATES, September 9, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Woodlawn Cemetery and Conservancy will soon unveil the completed restoration of the historic Samuel Untermyer family tomb, a remarkable work of architecture and sculpture that has been restored for the first time since its creation in the 1920s.
The restoration represents a major preservation milestone for Woodlawn and brings new attention to one of the cemetery’s most distinctive monuments. The Untermyer mausoleum was designed by renowned architect Paul Chalfin, best known for his work at Vizcaya in Miami, and features sculpture by celebrated American artist Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, founder of the Whitney Museum of American Art.
“It has been a pleasure to work with the Untermyer Family to restore this unique and important monument which is one of the largest lots at Woodlawn Cemetery. The project is a result of a partnership between the Woodlawn Cemetery and Conservancy, the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy, and Samuel Untermyer’s great-grandson Frank Irwin Untermyer and his son, preservationist Adrian Untermyer. The restoration echoes the remarkable revitalization of Untermyer Gardens, the nationally recognized historic garden created by Samuel Untermyer.

The completed restoration will be unveiled during a commemorative dedication on October 3, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery.
